One of the most influential teachers I’ve ever had is Ms. Choi, my high school English teacher. I first met her in grade 10 when she began teaching our class. I was an average student at the time and had little interest in learning the English language. But that changed completely after her classes.
She had an extraordinary teaching style. Instead of just explaining grammar or giving us vocabulary lists, she encouraged us to read books, perform small plays, and even create short English videos. Her lessons were always interactive and motivating, making learning a fun experience.
What really impressed me was her positive attitude. She believed that no student was “bad” at English—they just needed the right method and encouragement. I started participating more in class, and eventually, I even represented our school in an inter-school English debate.
Ms. Choi made me believe in myself. She not only improved my language skills but also helped me build confidence and creativity, which I now apply in university and part-time work. Because of her, I’m even considering becoming an English teacher myself.

Teachers have shifted from being the main source of knowledge to becoming facilitators. With online resources available, their role is more about guidance and motivation than simply delivering information.
5. Can parents be better teachers than school teachers?
In areas such as values and basic manners, yes. However, professional teachers are trained to deliver academic content effectively and objectively, which many parents are not equipped to do.
6. What subjects do you think are the most important for children today?
Besides core subjects like math and language, I believe digital literacy, environmental science, and communication skills are crucial in today’s world.
7. Do students in your country respect their teachers?
Generally, yes. In Korean culture, teachers are highly regarded and often treated with the same respect as parents. However, younger generations may show less formality.
8. Should schools focus more on practical or academic education?
There needs to be a balance. While academic knowledge builds a strong foundation, practical education prepares students for real-life challenges and careers.
9. Do you think teaching is a difficult profession?
Absolutely. It requires patience, emotional intelligence, and adaptability, not to mention long hours of preparation and grading. It’s one of the most demanding but rewarding jobs.
10. How can schools support teachers better?
Schools can provide better training, reduce administrative workload, and offer mental health support. Recognising and rewarding good teaching can also motivate educators.
