IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 – What the six types of questions are

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, there are six types of questions that can be asked. These are:

  1. Line Graphs: A line graph displays changes in data over time. You will be asked to describe and compare the data trends.
  2. Bar Graphs: A bar graph shows different categories of data and compares them. You will be asked to describe and compare the data.
  3. Pie Charts: A pie chart shows the proportions of different parts of a whole. You will be asked to describe and compare the data.
  4. Tables: A table shows information in a grid format. You will be asked to describe and compare the data.
  5. Maps: A map shows a geographical area and the location of different features. You will be asked to describe and compare the data.
  6. Process Diagrams: A process diagram shows a sequence of steps or stages in a process. You will be asked to describe and explain the process.
  7. Multiple graphs (mixed): you may also encounter a multiple graphs (mixed) question, which combines two or more types of graphs or charts in a single question. For example, you may be given a line graph and a bar graph, or a table and a pie chart.

It’s important to carefully read the instructions and the information provided in the graph or diagram, and to accurately identify the key features and trends in the data. Understanding the type of question you are being asked can help you structure your response and effectively communicate the information to the reader.
