IELTS Listening – Question Types Strategy, Tactics, & Analysis 

  1. Question Types:
    • Form Fill-the-Blank: This type of question requires the test-taker to complete a form by filling in the missing information with words or phrases from the audio recording.
    • Short Answer: This type of question requires the test-taker to answer a question or complete a sentence with a short answer of one or a few words.
    • Sentence Completion: This type of question requires the test-taker to fill in the missing words in a sentence or short text.
    • Fill the blank in Table: This type of question requires the test-taker to complete a table by filling in the missing information with words or numbers from the audio recording.
    • Labelling Plan, Diagram, Flowchart, or Map: This type of question requires the test-taker to label a visual aid, such as a plan, diagram, flowchart, or map, with the correct information based on the audio recording.
    • Summary Completion: This type of question requires the test-taker to complete a summary of the audio recording by filling in the missing information with words or phrases.
    • Multiple Choice – Standard: This type of question requires the test-taker to choose the correct answer from a list of options.
    • Multiple Choice – Completing a Sentence: This type of question requires the test-taker to choose the correct ending for an incomplete sentence from a list of options.
    • Multiple Choice – Choose Two or More from a List: This type of question requires the test-taker to choose two or more correct answers from a list of options.

These different question types require different listening and comprehension skills, so it is important to practice each type of question to become familiar with them and develop the necessary skills.

    • Familiarize yourself with the question types and practice each type to improve your skills.
    • Practice listening to different English accents and speakers to become accustomed to different speech patterns.
    • Use the time provided before each section to preview the questions and get an idea of what to listen for.
    • Take notes while listening to the recordings. This will help you remember important information and follow the structure of the audio.
    • Focus on the keywords in the questions and try to predict what kind of information you will need to listen for.
    • Pay attention to the instructions, especially for questions that require a specific number of words.
    • If you miss an answer, move on and focus on the next question. You can always come back to the missed question later if you have time.
    • Review your answers and check for any spelling mistakes or incorrect answers.
